What is an Electric Vehicle Home Charger?
An electric vehicle home charger is a charging point specifically for electric vehicles that connects into the homes electrical supply.
The factors you’ll need to consider are price, ease of installation, charging speed, connector and cable type, compatibility with your home and even how the wallbox looks.
As far back as 2014, the European Commission ruled that all public charging points should featuretype 2 connector compatibility.
This is why the majority of new electric cars and PHEVs feature Type 2 plugs and cables – and why most home wall box home EV chargers are designed for vehicles with Type 2 cables.
You then choose whether you want a tethered or untethered wallbox. A tethered point means the wallbox comes with its specific charging cable attached, which plugs straight into your car, now the downside with this is that it might not fit all car makes and models.
However you can generally buy adaptors to ensure that you get the correct fit to your vehicle.
An untethered wall box comes with a standard plug socket, into which you have to plug your own charging cable. These are generally supplied with most new electric cars.
The benefit with these types of charger is that if you swap cars or a new charging technology comes along, the only thing you should need to change is the cable.
How Much Does It Cost To Install?
The costs of home charging your Electric Vehicle
The cost of having a home charging station installed will vary depending on the charger you choose or is required and the work required to carry out the installation safely and correctly.
We provide a full site survey to assess your requirements and will then provide a quotation.
Typically the cost of installation ranges between £500 and £800 but it can sometimes be cheaper and is depending on a number of key factors, in particular the type and wattage output of the charger that you require.
How Long Will It Take To Charge My Car?
The most basic home chargers typically start at 3 to 3.7kW, with more advanced units delivering 7kW and the more expensive chargers delivering as much as 22kW.
Basically what you are buying with increased power is a faster charging time
Naturally, the price of the chargers goes up as you move up through the power bands.
As an example, a 3.7kW wall box will fully charge the 40kWh battery in a standard Nissan Leaf in around 13 hours – giving you 168 miles of range overnight – while a 7kW system will do so in less than six hours. At the top end, a 22kW charger would take less than two hours.
It’s a good idea to think about your daily mileage and driving requirements. For example If you drive only a few miles a day, you probably only need a 3.6kW charger to slowly recharge the vehicle overnight.
If you do a lot of driving, often arriving home with little charge left, and you need to use your car regularly throughout the week and at weekends, then a faster, more powerful charger will be a better option for you.
It’s worth noting that the maximum charging speed your house can deliver depends on the type of electricity supply it receives: most UK households have what’s known as a ‘single-phase’ connection, while larger buildings and factories tend to have more powerful ‘three-phase’ connections.
Consult our electrician to advise on what to expect from your home and your charger, to make sure that you buy the right charger for your home and driving requirements.
How Much Does it Cost to Charge an Electric Vehicle ?
On average in the uk, the cost of electricity is 17p per KWH, this generally means that to fully charge a 60KW electric car will cost between £9 and £10, providing you with approximately a range of 200 miles.
